To allow for transparancy to students about the way the faculty goes about its business there is the studentassessor or 'studentoehoorder'. Because of conflict of interest the function has to be seperate from other studentbodies as you become a (student)member of the faculty board and are privy to all sensitive and confidential information. The presence of the studentassessor alone influences the conversation as well that the input you give as 'the student'.
A large part of the time spent are spent on meetings. For example:
Bi-weekly meetings with the Faculty Board (FB)
Monthly General Meetings (GV) with the FB, the Employee Council (ODC) and the Faculty Student Council (FSR)
Monthly Studentassessor meeting (SOVU) with studentassessor from other faculties
Once every two months with the rector magnificus of the VU.
Monthly Strategic Meeting (SO) with FB and all the departmentheads.
Thrice a year the Portfolioholder Meeting (PO) with FB and the rector magnificus of the VU.
Twice a year the Board Meeting (BO) with FB and the Board of Directors (CvB)
Participating in de the F.S.O.G.B. together with the FSR, Program Committee's (OLC) and study associations.
Other activities are:
Managing and participating of the juryprocess of the Faculty Education Prizes.
Facilitating the selectionprocedure of studentmembers to the OLC's with the FSR.
Anything you feel like taking on.
The main responsibility is representing the student perspective in all the meetings where the Faculty Board (FB) participates. But above all, the Studentassessor is expected to have a proactive attitude in which you are well aware of the developments, state and state of affairs, a clear vision of matters that are (in)directly important to students, and a vision of the future of university education.
You have a lot of freedom in how you spend your time. It is possible to start projects that you like together with the FSR or other people. For example the current proces of educational prizes + website, this website, the current procedure of the OLC-studentmembers are all products of such cooperations and out of own initiative. The function is possible to have for two years. Our faculty is very accomodating to our students in this sense and people tend to want to work with you if you have an idea and are willing to do the leg-work. It is a great way to get to know the faculty from the inside and really get to understand how an organisation works. And develop skills.
If you would do all the meetings and prepare it averages out at 7-8 hours a week. It is very easy however to spend more time on it.
You get € 2.500,- for the whole year from the 'profileringsfonds' at the end of your period. Your renumaration for the extra hours pays off in valuable contacts and conversations and fun and meaningful projects (solving actual problems) as oppossed to solely monitoring and managing.

I was honoured to became the first student assessor of the new faculty Behavioural and Movement Sciences in 2015. At that moment I was doing the research master Human Movement Sciences. As a studentassessor I was closely involved in the faculty. It is interesting to have meetings with the faculty board, but also with your fellow students. This gives a nice diversity and this is an important task of a studentassessor. To bridge the gap between students and the faculty board.
As a studentassesor I learned on a playful way how the faculty and the VU university are organized and I learned a lot about leadership and managing. During the discussion with the faculty board, but also during the meetings with students. The F.S.O.G.B. was one of my policy points at that time, to bring students together and to get information to provide the faculty board with feedback. The F.S.O.G.B. is meeting with the Faculty Student Council, student associations, educational committees and the student assessor. It was really interesting to see the different perspective of this diverse group; this resulted every meeting in interesting discussions.
As studentassessor I had some fixed tasks, but I was also free to organize my own initiatives. Still I am proud of the FGB-festival I organized. Students of our faculty showed their social and cultural responsibility during that day. They explained to each other, the professors and the executive board of the VU, what they did next to their study, like voluntary work, starting a company and important research.
